“What’s the game plan?” Tuck asked as he pulled into Fawn Merriweather’s circle drive, his stomach knotting. Dahlia’s mama could be a serious piece of work. Snooty. Judgmental. And yet Dahlia had been having breakfast with Rusty Beller for the past three years. Rusty was a wild one, but the fact he was an up-and-coming attorney apparently made it okay in Fawn’s eyes.

Agnes gnawed her thumbnail. “I’m hoping by now Rusty’s told Dahlia it was a misunderstanding. I mean she surely called him as soon as she opened it, right?”

“We can only hope.” And that Rusty let her down gently. “Let’s get this over with.”

Nodding, Agnes clambered out of the truck and crept to the door of the Merriweather antebellum historical home. “You think Dahlia’s daddy is gonna have a come-apart?”

“Bernie?” Tuck scrunched his nose. “Bernie would rather be on the golf course or at the men’s lodge than in his own home. He’s probably never even met Rusty.” That was an exaggeration but not by much. Everyone knew of Bernie’s affairs, and Fawn stuck with him for appearances or was in self-denial. Maybe a bit of both.

A huge Christmas wreath decked in berries and bows greeted them at the black front door—the door of impending doom—along with pots of poinsettias on either side. “Here we go,” Agnes muttered and rang the doorbell. A few moments passed. “How long do we wait until we ring it again?”

“Fawn might not even be here.”

“Again, we can only hope.”

She put her finger on the button as the door opened. Fawn Merriweather stood like a wet hen with her bright, red feathers ruffled. “Well, if it isn’t Agnes Piercy.” Dressed in perfectly ironed slacks and a white sweater, she crossed her arms, tapping her left elbow with her cherry red nails. “I suppose you’ve heard the devastating news. I had to give Dahlia an entire Xanax to get her to sleep.”

“So, she knows the ring belongs to Daniel Jacobs?”

“She does now. Rusty got the voicemail and came by in the middle of the night confused. Not only did he tell her it wasn’t his ring, he broke things off completely. Felt like this was the right time.” Her perky nose twitched. “What do you have to say for yourself?”

Agnes looked to Tuck for words. “Sorry? I mean, I am sorry. I hate there was a mix-up—”

“Miss Piercy, you ruined a life last night. I heard about the nibbles tossed out to you for event planning, and I am here to tell you I am going to make sure you don’t get a single one after this nightmare!”

“Hey,” Tuck interjected. How dare this woman blame this entire mix-up on Agnes? “Agnes had everything planned and took measures to ensure the proper packages went into the right hands. And really, Daniel shouldn’t be passing off a ring that expensive, but that’s not my business.” That was a dumb move on his part—and lazy. “She was not the person who made the mistake. And it was only a matter of time until Rusty broke up with Dahlia.
